Best Spots for Oregon Day Trips

Traveling far from home to some exotic distant locale can be a lovely fantasy, but experience shows that once the expense, logistics, and other considerations come into play– especially if kids are involved!– reality and fantasy don’t always align.

Luckily in Oregon we have an abundance of amazing places to visit without going too far at all! If you’re trying to come up with some last-minute summer plans, or just want a fun destination within a more reasonable reach, you might consider some of these awesome spots that aren’t too far from home! Everything here is great to do with (or without) kids, within a couple hours or less from Portland.

1. Enchanted Forest (Salem, OR)

Located near Salem, Oregon, the Enchanted Forest is a whimsical theme park inspired by fairy tales and folklore. It was designed and essentially hand-built by one man and his family, giving a unique (and slightly creepy) vibe to its storybook characters, charming rides, and magical atmosphere for visitors of all ages. My kids love it so much we go every year.

2. Trillium Lake or Lost Lake

Both Trillium Lake and Lost Lake offer breathtaking views of Oregon’s Cascade Range, reflecting the iconic Mount Hood in their pristine waters. Visitors can enjoy activities such as kayaking, hiking along picturesque trails, camping, and simply relaxing amidst the serene beauty of these alpine lakes. Lost Lake has campsites and Yurts you have to book well in advance (it books up fast), but you can always just spend the day there.

3. Sou’wester Lodge (Seaview, WA)

Not for just the day, but for overnight, the Sou’wester Lodge in Seaview, Washington, offers a quirky and charming retreat with vintage trailers and cozy cabins nestled amidst coastal scenery. Visitors can relax in retro-inspired accommodations, participate in workshops and classes, or explore nearby beaches, embracing a laid-back coastal lifestyle. They had a “sound bath” as part of it’s offerings when we went there but I think it varies on the day.

4. Wildlife Safari (Winston, OR)

Located in Winston, Oregon, Wildlife Safari is a drive-through animal park where visitors can observe over 500 animals from Africa, Asia, and the Americas in their natural habitats. This safari adventure offers an up-close encounter with wildlife such as lions, giraffes, and elephants, providing an unforgettable experience for animal enthusiasts.

5. Agate Hunting at Tunnel Beach (Oceanside, OR)

Nestled along the Oregon coast, Tunnel Beach is renowned for its rich deposits of colorful agates. Visitors can explore the rocky shores during low tide to hunt for these semi-precious stones, enjoying stunning coastal views and the thrill of discovering hidden gems.

6. Sand Sledding in Florence, OR

The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area near Florence offers exhilarating sand sledding opportunities on towering dunes that overlook the Pacific Ocean. Adventurous visitors can rent sandboards or sleds to glide down the sandy slopes, enjoying a thrilling and unique outdoor activity. If you have just adults or older kids, you can rent a dune buggy too!

7. Wings and Waves (McMinnville, OR)

Situated in McMinnville, Oregon, Wings and Waves Waterpark is a unique attraction featuring water slides and pools housed within a retired Boeing 747 aircraft. Visitors can enjoy aquatic fun while learning about aviation through interactive exhibits and displays, making it an educational and thrilling destination. If you all like aviation, the Evergreen museum is right next door too.

Located near Mount St. Helens in Washington, Ape Cave is one of the longest lava tubes in North America. Visitors can explore its dark, otherworldly tunnels, marveling at lava formations and learning about volcanic geology through ranger-led tours or self-guided adventures, making it a fascinating underground exploration.

9. Oregon Vortex, Oregon Caves   (Southern OR)

Probably a weekend trip instead of just the day, the Oregon Vortex near Gold Hill is a mysterious natural phenomenon where gravitational anomalies appear to defy the laws of physics. Nearby, the Oregon Caves National Monument offers guided tours through intricate marble caves filled with stalactites and stalagmites, showcasing the region’s geological wonders.

10. Ripley’s Believe It or Not! (Newport, OR)

Located in Newport, Oregon, Ripley’s Believe It or Not! offers a fascinating collection of oddities and curiosities from around the world. Visitors can explore exhibits showcasing unusual artifacts, bizarre artworks, and mind-boggling facts, providing an entertaining and educational experience. Also in Newport is a great Aquarium, and don’t forget to see the sea lions that sun-bathe on the docks in the bay.

11. Tree of Life (Forks, WA)

The Tree of Life in Kalaloch, Washington, is a striking coastal landmark—an ancient Sitka spruce that has miraculously survived despite its roots being exposed to the harsh coastal elements. Visitors can admire this resilient tree and explore the beautiful beaches and rugged coastline of Olympic National Park.

12. Tour of Ghost Towns (Oregon)

Throughout Oregon and Washington, ghost towns like Shaniko, Bodie, and Molson offer a glimpse into the region’s rich history. Exploring these abandoned settlements allows visitors to step back in time, experiencing the remnants of old storefronts, homes, and other relics from the past.
